At Six and Seven

Ulterior Gallery is pleased to present At Six and Seven, a group exhibition of works by fifteen artists. Artists included are: Maryam Amiryani, Robert Beck/ Robert Buck, Keren Benbenisty, George Bolster, Camel Collective, Douglas Goldberg, Yasuo Ihara, Takashi Kunitani, Margaret Meehan, Zai Nomura, Mamie Tinkler, Sarah Tortora, Gaku Tsutaja, Carrie Yamaoka, and Minoru Yoshida.
The world seems to be in disarray and we are in a confusing time. In Richard II, Shakespeare wrote, “All is uneven, And everything is left at six and seven.” As we move from our sixth to our seventh year, Ulterior has chosen to dive into the chaos to see what is beyond—to reach beyond others’ expectations and to embrace an ulterior future.
Employing a broad range of conceptual and material approaches, these fifteen artists represent the breadth of the gallery’s exhibition history, as well as the founder’s vision. What began as a tiny space to show work has evolved into a fully-fledged program—one that has embraced the unknown. That has allowed Ulterior to take risks, and present the unexpected.
Maryam Amiryani was born in Shiraz, Iran in 1967. Amiryani now lives and works in Marfa, TX, with her husband and her dog.
Robert Beck was born in 1959 in Baltimore, MD. Beck changed his surname from Beck to Buck as a work of art in 2008. Robert Buck currently spends his time between New York and West Texas.
Keren Benbenisty was born in Israel in 1977. She lived and worked in Paris from 1998 through 2011 and currently lives and works between New York and Jaffa, Israel.
George Bolster was born in Cork, Ireland, in 1972, and lives and works in New York City.
Camel Collective was formed as a research group during a fellowship at the Whitney Independent Study Program in 2005. Anthony Graves and Carla Herrera-Prats worked together solely as Camel Collective since 2010. Carla Herrera-Prats passed away from cancer in 2019, and Anthony Graves continues Camel Collective.
Douglas Goldberg was born in 1971 in Englewood, NY, and currently lives and works between New York City and Upstate NY.
Yasuo Ihara was born in 1932, in Osaka, Japan. He moved to New York in 1963, and was based in Brooklyn until his death in 2010.
Takashi Kunitani was born in Kyoto, Japan in 1974, where he continues to live and work.
Margaret Meehan was born in Philadelphia, PA in 1970. She currently lives and works in Richmond, VA.
Zai Nomura was born in 1979 and grew up in Hyogo, Japan; he has been working between Tokyo and New York since 2020.
Mamie Tinkler was born in Brighten, TN in 1978, and currently lives and works in New York, NY.
Sarah Tortora was born in New Haven, CT in 1988, and is now based in Brooklyn, NY.
Gaku Tsutaja was born in Tokyo, Japan in 1974. In 2000, she formed the artist collective (or unit) gansomaeda and produced exhibitions until 2005. Since 2006, she has been based in New York, and currently lives and works in Queens, NY.
Carrie Yamaoka was born in Glen Cove, NY, in 1957, and is now based in New York, NY. She is a founding member of the queer art collective fierce pussy with Nancy Brooks Brody, Joy Episalla, and Zoe Leonard.
Minoru Yoshida was born in Osaka, Japan, in 1935. In 1970, Yoshida first moved to Los Angeles, then later that same year crossed the country and arrived in New York.. He returned to Kyoto, Japan in 1978, and remained in Kujoyama in Kyoto until he passed away in 2010.
